Why Hand-Knotted Rugs are So Special.

A Short History Of Hand Knotted rugs
Persian rugs have been manufactured by hand for thousands of years.

The earliest hand knotted rug still in existence today dates back to the 5th century BC. It was discovered in Southern Siberia and was preserved over the centuries by the permafrost. It is known as the Pazyryk rug and can be seen on display at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Because of their use, antique rugs have seldom lasted through the centuries and is it very rare to find a rug that dates back much before the 16th century.

The origin of rug making is the issue of much speculation and disagreement, although one could assume the first hand knotted rugs were probably made in the middle east.

The trade of hand knotted rugs is still a vast one. For example, Hand-knotted rugs are one of Iran's biggest exports, second only to oil. Many rugs are still made by the Nomadic tribes of Iran who travel throughout the year with their cattle as they have done for many generations.

The manufacture, colour, design and knotting processes of these rugs are passed down through the generations and all have subtle differences. The Nomads trade their rugs with local and international dealers as they travel.

Other countries and regions famous for rug manufacture include; Turkey, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Caucasus mountains, Iraq, China, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Spain, Syria, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan to name a few!
